An tampilan LED outdoor that only carries IP65 on its front face will still fail from the inside out. The IP rating is not a promise of weatherproofing — it is a description of what one lab test measured, and most suppliers hide the fact that the rear of the cabinet is rated lower. Here is how to read the two numbers, why front and rear both matter, and what to add for coastal, tropical and desert sites.

Ringkasan Utama
  • The first digit (6) is dust-tight in both IP65 and IP66; the difference is only water-jet pressure in the second digit (5 = low pressure, 6 = high pressure).
  • For a fixed outdoor install, IP65 on both front AND rear is the correct specification — rear-only IP40 cabinets are the most common way water kills an outdoor screen.
  • IP rating is a static lab test. It does not guarantee long-term resistance to humidity, thermal cycling or salt spray — those need additional coatings and drainage.
  • Coastal, tropical and desert environments each add a specific risk (salt, condensation, sand) that the IP number alone does not address.

01 — Decode the Number

How to Read an IP Rating in Five Seconds

An IP rating is two independent digits. The first is solid-particle protection (dust), the second is liquid-ingress protection (water). In the ratings you will actually see on outdoor LED, the first digit is almost always 6 — fully dust-tight.

penilaian Dust (1st digit) Water (2nd digit) Real-World Meaning
IP65 6 — dust-tight 5 — low-pressure water jets Rain, splashing, hosing from any direction
IP66 6 — dust-tight 6 — high-pressure water jets Power-washing, driven rain at pressure
IP67 6 — dust-tight 7 — immersion up to 1m Temporary submersion — rarely needed for displays

Notice what is identical between IP65 and IP66: the dust protection. Both are fully sealed against dust. The only difference is the pressure of the water jet used in the lab test — 65 survives a gentler jet, 66 a harder one. For a screen mounted on a wall, the practical question is which one matches the water your site actually throws at it.

02 — Where Water Actually Enters

Front vs Rear: The Most Common Way an Outdoor Screen Dies

Cross section diagram of outdoor LED cabinet comparing IP65 vs IP66 water jet protection on front and rear faces

The single most common specification trick in fixed outdoor LED is quoting IP65 for the front face only, while the rear of the cabinet is a far lower rating — often IP40 or IP54. On a wall-mounted billboard, the rear face is exactly where rain collects against the wall and where condensation forms. A panel rated IP65 front / IP40 rear will take on water from the back and fail from the inside.

What “IP65 Front & Rear” Means
  • Both faces tested to the same water-jet standard
  • Rear cabinet seam, glands and service panel all sealed
  • Suitable for exposed, free-standing or wall-mounted outdoor use
The Rear-Rating Scam
  • Datasheet says “IP65” — but only the front module is rated
  • Rear is IP40/IP54 and relies on the wall to shed water
  • Fails first at cable glands and the service door, not the LEDs

Both Square 960 and Square 1000 carry IP65 on both the front and rear faces — not just the front module. The FO Series goes further with IP66 on both faces. If a supplier quotes a single IP number without stating which face it applies to, ask them to confirm the rear rating in writing.

03 — Beyond the Lab

What an IP Test Does Not Prove About Your Installation

An IP65 test is a snapshot: a sealed cabinet, sprayed with water jets at a fixed pressure, for a fixed duration, in a controlled lab. It certifies one thing — that a new, correctly-assembled cabinet resists that specific jet. It says nothing about what happens over five years of real weather.

Kelembaban & Kondensasi

A panel can pass IP65 and still develop slow moisture ingress over months of thermal cycling, as day-night temperature swings pump humid air through micro-gaps at the seals.

Bersepeda Termal

Gaskets age. Seals that are perfect at installation compress, harden and crack after years of -20°C to +60°C swings. The IP number was measured before any of that happened.

Driven Rain + Wind

Rain at the right angle combined with wind can exceed IP65 test conditions on an exposed rooftop or coastal facade. The test is static; weather is not.

The IP rating tells you how the cabinet starts. It does not tell you how it ages. What matters for a ten-year outdoor asset is the gasket material, the drainage design and the coatings — not just the two digits.

04 — Match the Climate

Coastal, Tropical and Desert: What Each Environment Adds

The IP rating is the baseline. Three climates add risks that no IP number addresses on its own, and each needs a specific add-on beyond the standard cabinet.

Lingkungan Hidup The Extra Risk Apa yang harus ditambahkan
Pesisir/laut Salt spray corrodes connectors, fasteners and exposed metal Anti-corrosion coating on cabinet & hardware, sealed gold-plated connectors
Tropical / high humidity Condensation inside the cabinet during cool-down cycles Conformal coating on PCB, active drainage at the cabinet base
Desert / high sand Fine sand abrades seals and clogs ventilation under extreme heat Reinforced gasket material, sealed vents, and thermal headroom for +60°C
Gulf Heat Is a Weatherproofing Problem Too

Our Saudi Arabia DOOH deployment pairs IP65 front-and-rear cabinets with a common cathode drive specifically to cut cabinet temperature in sustained 45°C+ ambient conditions. Heat and moisture are not separate problems — a hot cabinet with a degrading seal is how condensation gets in. See the full case in our Saudi DOOH network case study.

05 — Don’t Over-Specify

IP66: When It’s Justified — and When It’s Overkill

For most fixed billboard and facade installations, IP65 adalah spesifikasi yang tepat dan memadai.. IP66 earns its price only when the screen faces sustained high-pressure water — power-washing, coastal driven rain, or an exposed mount where cleaning crews hose the face down regularly.

IP65 Is Correct For
  • Roadside and rooftop billboards
  • Standard DOOH facades
  • Most stadium and venue screens
  • General rain and splash exposure
IP66 Earns Its Price For
  • Sites subject to routine power-washing
  • Exposed coastal mounts with driven rain
  • Close-viewing semi-outdoor screens cleaned frequently
  • Fine-pitch panels where dust entry is costlier (FO Series)

Our FO Series — the fine-pitch semi-outdoor line for transit hubs and covered facades — is IP66 on both faces, because those screens sit at close viewing distance and get cleaned far more often than a billboard thirty metres up. The higher rating is a deliberate match to the cleaning regime, not a blanket upgrade.

06 — Before You Sign Off

Three Questions That Expose a Thin IP Claim

Before you specify an tampilan LED outdoor, put these three questions to your supplier in writing. A serious manufacturer answers all three without hesitation.

  1. Is the IP rating on the front, the rear, or both? Ask for the exact rating of the rear face. If it is IP40 or IP54, the panel is not weatherproof in the way the datasheet implies — and water will enter from the back.
  2. What gasket material and drainage design do you use? The long-term seal depends on gasket compound and whether the cabinet actively drains any condensate. A sealed box with no drainage traps moisture.
  3. Do you apply a conformal coating to the PCB, and is the cabinet anti-corrosion treated? This is what separates a coastal-spec cabinet from a standard one. If the supplier hesitates on this, assume it is not coated.
Send Your Environment, Get the Right Build

Tell us your site — coastal, tropical, desert or temperate — and the screen size. An engineer confirms the correct IP rating and the coatings you actually need, so you pay for weatherproofing that matches your site rather than a number that sounds impressive.

Pairing this with the right brightness spec ke service-access choice is how you build a screen that lasts — read those next.

FAQ (Pertanyaan Umum)

Both are dust-tight (first digit 6). The difference is water-jet pressure in the second digit: IP65 resists low-pressure jets, IP66 resists high-pressure jets. For most fixed billboards and facades, IP65 is the correct and sufficient rating. IP66 earns its price when a screen faces power-washing or driven coastal rain. Square 960 and Square 1000 are IP65 on both faces; FO Series is IP66 on both.

Yes. A cabinet rated IP65 front / IP40 rear will take on water from the back, where rain collects against the wall and condensation forms. The rear rating is where most outdoor screens actually fail. Confirm in writing that the rear face carries the same rating as the front before you buy.

No. IP65 is a static lab test on a new, correctly-assembled cabinet. It does not guarantee long-term resistance to humidity, thermal cycling or salt spray. Over years, gaskets compress and crack as the cabinet cycles from -20°C to +60°C. Long-term weatherproofing depends on gasket material, drainage design and conformal coating, not just the two digits.

IP65 front and rear is the baseline, but coastal sites add a salt-spray risk the IP number does not cover. Specify an anti-corrosion coating on the cabinet and hardware, plus sealed gold-plated connectors, so salt does not corrode the fasteners and contacts that hold the screen together.

Desert sites need IP65 front and rear plus reinforced gasket material and sealed vents, because fine sand abrades seals and clogs ventilation under extreme heat. The bigger issue in a desert is thermal: confirm the cabinet is rated for sustained +60°C operation so heat does not accelerate seal and component ageing.

Choose IP66 when the screen faces sustained high-pressure water — routine power-washing, exposed coastal mounts with driven rain, or close-viewing semi-outdoor screens cleaned frequently. FO Series is IP66 on both faces precisely because transit-hub and facade screens get cleaned far more often than a billboard thirty metres up.

Ask three questions in writing: is the rating on the front, rear or both; what gasket material and drainage design is used; and is the PCB conformal-coated with an anti-corrosion-treated cabinet. A serious manufacturer answers all three without hesitation. If they quote a single IP number without stating which face it covers, treat it as the front face only.
